Designed by doctors, SolarSafe is a unique patented sun monitor designed to help guard against sunburn and promote sun safety practices. The wristband allows you to monitor at a glance your exposure to harmful UVA and UVB rays through its colour change, alerting the user when to re-apply sunscreen and when to get out of the sun.
What are people using it for?
The sun band is ideal for everyone – in particular children enabling parents to easily monitor sun exposure to know when to re-apply sun screen and get out of the sun. The SolarSafe sun band also has the added benefit of acting as an ID band for your child. The guardians details can be written on the enclosed ID sticker with the pen provided and then sealed and fixed to the reverse of the band so that the child carries this information on their person in case of separation.
What’s the science behind it?
The adjustable, single use sun band changes colour when exposed to UV light. The higher the SPF of sun screen used, the longer it takes to change. The band is calibrated for use with sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher and reaches it’s final colour change when the user has reached their MED threshold (mean erythema dose) which is the amount of sun that causes initial reddening of the skin. The adjustable band is suitable for use by children and adults and is efficient at temperatures up to 50°c and relative humidity up to 100%. The band responds to both UVA and UVB rays. It is non-toxic, waterproof and suitable for saltwater use.
